The Mercedes-AMG E63 S is a performance variant of the popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan that was redesigned for the 2017 model year. The E63 S is new for 2018 and uses the best of components of the Mercedes-AMG partnership to offer a driver access to power and dynamic handling while giving passengers plenty of head- and legroom.
For this review I drove a heavily upgraded version of the car, which has a base price of $104,400. All in, the total cost of the vehicle, including taxes, destination, and delivery was right around $120,000.

The strong features of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S start at the nose with the radiator grille, which features a large version of the company’s three-point star. Below that is a jet wing inspired front bumper, large black splitter, and black intakes. The model I drove came with a $3,950 Selenite Gray Mango (matte) paint job that was stunning. I can’t imagine choosing the car in any other color.
The tester also had matte black 20-inch AMG forged cross-spoke wheels, which accentuated the red Brembo calipers. The Night Package ($750) deleted chrome trim around the windows and on certain exterior styling cues that make the car look more pedestrian in its classic E-Series variant.
The car is attractive in a sleeper sports sedan way, with dynamic body creases helping it look fast, from the right angle, when it’s sitting still.

The E63 S gets its power from a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that generates 603 horsepower and 627 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine comes mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission that delivers very desirable smooth shifts. The car gets from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. It’s all VERY satisfying, delivering smooth acceleration with plenty of power available when you request it.
The model comes with MG Performance 4MATIC+ permanent all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution and drift mode standard. It hugs the road with the kind of downforce that keeps you politely planted without feeling too sticky.

The interior of the E63 S screams class without the high-colored details that make the more sophisticated palate turn away. The rounded vent bezels and sweeping dashboard are clear indicators that you’re in an expensive car while the uses of suede is an easy reminder of the power until the sedan’s hood.
The car’s front and back seats are comfortable, even when you’re out driving all day- something you’re bound to find yourself doing in this performance machine. The front sport seats feature stiff bolstering and integral head restraints are an option. The bolsters move according to the way the driver turns the wheel, offering invasive support whether you’re cornering on the track at high speed or take the route around your local traffic circle behind Nana who is headed to her weekly hair appointment in her HR-V.

The 2018 E63 S has as much cargo space as the traditional E-Class sedan. The 15-cubic feet of space are slightly below average for the car’s class, but plenty for most people.

The car can be equipped with most technologically advanced safety equipment, though it does come in the form of add-ons in various packages offered. For over $100,000, the least the car could do it come equipped with the same sort of safety technology Toyota offers in their Corolla.

The E63 S starts at $104,400, which is $32,800 more than the base price of the lesser 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 model. The base model E-Series E300 starts at just $52,950, which sounds like a bargain compared to the E63 S.
With its hefty price tag, the E63 S completes with other high-end luxury sport sedans including the Porsche Panamera, Audi RS7, and BMW M5.

If I had an extra $120,000 to spend, you’d find the E63 S in my driveway as my daily driver I’d find excuses to go places. It’s a car with the type of speedy practicality that reminds you that driving something that can fit your family can be quite fun.
